Mindex

What is Mindex

A desktop app for Markdown knowledge bases, driven by the assistant CLI you already pay for.

Mindex is a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. It opens a folder of Markdown files and gives you an editor, a note tree, links, a graph, Git and a chat panel over the top of them.

The chat is not ours. Mindex drives Claude, Codex or Gemini — whichever you have installed and signed in — so answers are billed to the subscription you already pay for. Mindex holds no API key and has no account.

What it is made of

  • Files. Every note is a .md file with YAML frontmatter, in a folder you chose. No database, no import, no export.
  • An editor. A WYSIWYG surface and the raw Markdown, both writing to the same file.
  • An assistant. A chat that can read and write notes, with a scope you set per question.
  • Context. One context file per folder, rewritten in the background as the folder changes.
  • History. A local version on every write, and Git when you want a history someone else can read.

What it is not

It is not a sync service. There is no Mindex server, no account and nothing uploaded by the app. When you ask the assistant something, that request goes from your machine to the CLI you picked, under your own subscription and that vendor's terms.

It is not a database with a Markdown export. The files are the state. Delete the app and the vault is still a folder of Markdown you can read anywhere.
