The chat cannot find a CLI to run. Usually it is not installed, not signed in, or not on the PATH.
Mindex runs an assistant CLI on your machine. If it cannot find one, the chat will say so.
In a terminal:
claude --version
codex --version
gemini --version
If the command is not found, install it:
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
npm install -g @openai/codex
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli
Run the bare command once in a terminal — claude, codex or gemini — and
complete the sign-in. Mindex uses your existing session; it has no credentials
of its own and never asks for an API key.
This is the common one on macOS. An app launched from Finder does not inherit the PATH your shell profile sets up, so a CLI installed under a version manager (nvm, asdf, volta) can work in your terminal and be invisible to Mindex.
Check where it actually is:
which claude
If that path comes from a version manager, the reliable fix is a global install outside it, or a symlink into a directory that is always on the PATH.
Settings → General → AI chooses which assistant Mindex drives. If you installed Codex but Mindex is set to Claude Code, it will look for the one it was told to.
